But I would venture to say there is much, much more to success than degrees and qualifications, in any business or field of study.

Some of the most successful people in the history of the world have spent little to no time in college or graduate school. They didn’t achieve a high level in education and don’t have letters behind their name. Some didn’t even finish grade school. Not to mention board certifications, association statuses, etc.

What did they achieve? They achieved what most people would call success. And what is success? The answer to that question resides in the mind of the one who wants it. Success is different for everyone, but it generally can be evaluated in terms of money, achievement, contentment, and freedom.

Money brings freedom. Freedom brings contentment. Contentment is derived from achievement. Achievement brings money… The concepts of success (in terms of how most people view success) are intertwined and so connected that each is a derivative of, and cause of, the other.

Both can bring tremendous riches. Both can lift one to the highest peaks of human achievement. But there is a significant difference between the two.

I have had the advantage of working with and knowing many high profile people over the years; some of these individuals are related to me. All of them are phenomenally successful. A few garnered multi millions in business; others achieved the epitome of adoration in their particular field of endeavor. But they weren’t born into riches and opportunity. In fact, most of them started out very poor, with drunks for fathers, dysfunctional families, racial barriers, and no special traits or skills that would give them advantage.

Each achieved their goals by a life-controlling attitude. The difference I saw between them was the type of attitude. One was a giving attitude, the other a taking attitude.

For those with the taking attitude, success was an inevitable result. These people took every opportunity, and I mean EVERY opportunity, to gain an advantage in their business or endeavor. And oftentimes this meant walking right over someone near to them that should have meant more to them. Taking time or money or opportunity from someone else so they could have the time or opportunity or money for themselves. This became a life pattern for these individuals, and after watching their lives and the results of those lives, I could see the fallout was not something to be desired.

Others achieved success by giving, and giving at every opportunity. The goal of these people was to create or organize or build something for the opportunity and benefit of others. And, in the process, these entrepreneurs were themselves “given” riches and opportunity and blessing. The true difference was found in the result of their lives. For having lived and worked, these people built the lives of other people, and the positive results span the globe, bringing opportunity and blessing for untold numbers of disadvantaged people.

To many, this approach may appear counter-intuitive, less than rational. But I contend that the way to riches and opportunity and blessing (and any other positive adjective you insert) is by developing and implementing a giving attitude. Of all small business ideas, this one truth will benefit the entrepreneur more than all else.

To have made a fortune in any business, or to have achieved the pinnacle of success in a certain skill or ability… but to horde the benefits to oneself alone… how meaningful is that? How can anyone say “I have been successful” when they have taken from others so that they might have themselves?

If success is to be realized, it must be realized by the results that it brings: contentment, satisfaction, and freedom. Wealth and notoriety alone NEVER constitute success.
